Cubs News: Epstein: "We're still in touch with a lot of the free agents"

by - Senior Editor -

Baseball is back as the Chicago Cubs held their first press conference of the season on Tuesday in Mesa, Arizona.

Cubs president of operations Theo Epstein discussed the fact that the team might not be done with adding relievers for bullpen depth.

"We're still in touch with a lot of the free agents out there and their representatives," Epstein said. "I'd say there's a possibility. We've been active lately in the reliever market. There have been some quality relievers out there in pretty affordable deals. There's always a chance that we're able to squeeze one more in to give Joe Maddon a number of quality options of depth."

Epstein knows with so many relievers left without jobs in free agency, one or two guys will probably fall in the laps of the Cubs.

"We'd love to be in a position where we can withstand a couple of injuries in spring training and still put a really quality bullpen out there. That's one place where the market has been pretty soft and pretty slow developing, and we've been active. We'll stay in touch with everybody."

The most significant bullpen addition this offseason for the Cubs has been the acquisition of Brad Brach.
