Cubs News: Jon Lester headed to the IL

by - Senior Editor -

Jon Lester is the heart and soul of the pitching staff for the Cubs.

Bad news on the injury front for him.

Lester will be placed on the injured list on Tuesday with his left hamstring injury according to multiple reports. The new injury list is a minimum of 10 days for short-term injuries.

He will have an MRI today to check out how serious the injury is.

Joe Maddon told 670 The Score the following about Lester's injury.

"Of course he's going to miss a start," Maddon said. "Coming out of the game yesterday, Jonnny is going to miss at least one and probably maybe even two starts. He may. So you have to start developing plan B. We'll start developing plan B. We have different options."

Tyler Chatwood could get the start on Sunday against the Angels in replacing Lester's turn in the rotation.

"We have to figure out how we're going to work it from there," Maddon said. "Mike Montgomery is on the DL right now, so you have to wait on him. I think Tyler Chatwood has been throwing the ball well. And again, I don't even know if the guys upstairs have other thoughts regarding this."

The other real possibility would be Alec Mills who is currently on the 40-man roster.

Lester said the following about the injury on Monday after the 10-0 win against the Pirates.

"It felt like a cramp," he said. "I didn’t feel it pop or any tingling or any numbness or anything like that. More of a cramping sensation. It was just kinda felt like something was in there grabbing me a little bit. I’ve never really had anything wrong with my legs before. We’ll find out some more tomorrow."
