by - Senior Editor -

The Chicago Cubs are in a period of transition as several of their core pieces from their 2016 championship season might be traded away this offseason.

New York Post's Mike Puma is reporting on Friday that the Cubs and Mets have recently talked about a trade involving third baseman Kris Bryant.

"There's been dialogue between the Mets and Cubs recently about Kris Bryant," he posted on social media. "The Cubs really like catcher Francisco Alvarez, one of the Mets' top prospects. Sandy Alderson indicated yesterday he isn't trading top prospects."

The prospect in the trade rumor talk was a 19-year-old catcher who is currently ranked the Mets' No. 2 overall prospect according to MLB Pipeline.

Bryant is in his final year of team control next season for around $20 million.

He hit only .206 with four homers and 11 RBIs last season.
