Bears sign Oklahoma DB Justin Broiles to free agent deal

by - Senior Editor -

The Chicago Bears have signed Oklahoma DB Justin Broiles as an undrafted free agent.

As part of his UDFA deal, Broiles will receive a reported signing bonus of $2,000.

During his senior year at Oklahoma, Broiles played in all 13 games and started each of the last 12. He recorded 71 tackles, which ranked him fourth on the team, as well as 3.0 tackles for loss, one interception, and two pass breakups

He was also one of three recipients of Oklahoma's coveted Don Key Award in 2022, which is presented for excellence on and off the field.

Broiles also earned honorable mention All-Big 12 accolades from the league's coaches and was named an Academic All-Big 12 First Team honoree.

Broiles had a less-than-impressive Relative Athletic Score (RAS) of 1.01 out of a possible 10.00 during his combine testing.

This ranked him 878 out of 976 free safeties from 1987 to 2023. However, despite his low RAS, the Bears saw something in Broiles that they liked and decided to take a chance on him.

Off the field, Broiles graduated from Oklahoma in May 2021 with a degree in African and African American studies.

The Bears have a strong history of developing defensive backs, and Broiles will have the opportunity to learn from some of the best in the business. He will be joining a secondary that features the likes of Eddie Jackson and Jaylon Johnson, who have already established themselves as leaders on the Bears' defense.

As an undrafted free agent, Broiles will have to work hard to earn a spot on the Bears' roster. He will need to prove himself in training camp and during the preseason games, but all anyone can ask for is a shot.
