Lester and Cishek pounded in Cubs’ loss to Rockies

After splitting the squad, then splitting a pair of games on Friday (“W” vs. Rangers, “L” vs. Indians), the Cubs (16-12-2) regrouped, quite literally, to take on the Rockies (12-15) last night in Peoria, Arizona. Big-Jon Lester (0-0, 9.53 ERA) made his final start of the spring, with his counterpart being, Rockies’ lefty, Kyle Freeland (3-1, 3.95 ERA).

Lester was rocked for six runs in three innings, and then the Rockies tagged Steve Cishek for five more in the seventh. The Cubs would rally in the eighth, but it wouldn’t be enough as they fell by a final score of 11-6.

T1: (COL: LHP-Freeland) Albert Almora Jr: Doubled to left (first pitch). Kris Bryant: Groundout to the pitcher. Anthony Rizzo: Fouled-out, Nolan Arenado wound up in the stands after making the catch, Almora was tagged and takes third. Javier Baez: Singled to the right, scoring Almora. Willson Contreras: Double, Baez to third. Ben Zobrist: Groundout to second. Cubs lead 1-0.

Tomorrow the Cubs will head to Peoria Stadium to face the Padres. Joe Maddon has not yet named his starter, but the Padres intend on sending southpaw, Logan Allen (2-0, 7.27 ERA) to the hill.
