Cubs News: Arrieta takes loss despite impressive 12K's

by - Senior Editor -

The Arizona Diamondbacks (25-34) defeated the Chicago Cubs (39-16) 3-2 on a beautiful Sunday afternoon to avoid the series sweep and finished the season series with the Cubs with a record of 2-5.

Jake Arrieta who is affectionally called "Snake" by some of his teammates had one of the wackier performances this season taking the loss going five innings giving up nine hits, three runs, a walk and an amazing 12 strikeouts. He was one strikeout away from tieing the most strikeouts for a five-inning start in major league history.

It was also the fourth time this season that he has gone five or fewer innings in a ballgame and his first loss in 25 starts (7/25/15).

He also had a deep double that hit the center field wall past Michael Bourne's glove to score Miguel Montero in the bottom of the second inning to make the score 2-1 Arizona.

Diamondbacks starter Patrick Corbin had a solid performance going seven innings scattering five hits, two runs and five strikeouts.

Cubs infielder Javy Baez hit his fourth homer of the season with a solo shot to the right-field bleachers with two outs in the sixth inning to make the score 3-2 Diamondbacks.

Joe Maddon was ejected from the game in the seventh inning for arguing a check-swing call on Paul Goldschmidt. It appeared in replays that Goldschmidt had swung at the pitch in the dirt by reliever Trevor Cahill.

Several members of the men's USA Soccer team sang the 7th inning stretch to a nice ovation.

Cubs star Anthony Rizzo pinch-hit with two outs in the ninth inning and drew a walk but Miguel Montero grounded out weakly to end the game.

Lefty Jon Lester (6-3, 2.29 ERA) will take the mound against lefty Adam Morgan (1-4, 7.07 ERA) on Monday at 6:05 EST at Philadelphia.

Postgame Notes: The Cubs have lost consecutive games started by Jake Arrieta for the first time since May 2-7 of last season vs. Milwaukee and at St. Louis … the Cubs are now 0-4 this season in the final game of a homestand.

The Cubs allowed five hits but just one run in the fifth inning … marked the first time they have allowed at least five hits, but one or fewer runs in an inning since April 6, 1989 vs. Philadelphia (5 H, 1 R in 9th).

The Cubs struck out 18 batters, their most in a 9.0-inning game since August 26, 1998 at Cincinnati (18 strikeouts) … marked their most in any game since fanning 18 batters, July 29, 2014 vs. Colorado (16 innings).

Matt Szczur (1-for-3) has hit safely in 11 of his last 15 games with an at-bat.

Trevor Cahill (1.2 IP, 2 BB, 4 SO) struck out a season-high four batters … tied his most ever as a reliever (last, 9/15/15 @ Pittsburgh).

Joe Maddon was ejected by 1B Umpire Tripp Gibson in the seventh inning arguing a checked swing call … his first ejection of the season.
