Hammel gives up 5 homers in loss against Mets

by - Senior Editor -

NEW YORK -- What a crazy and unpredictable game. The New York Mets crushed the Chicago Cubs 10-2 during a rain-soaked game on Friday night at Citi Field. The game had three rain delays totaling one hour and fifty-eight minutes and to say Jason Hammel had a bad day at the office would be a severe understatement. He surrendered up a career-high 10 runs and five home runs and it was the first time that a Cubs starter has allowed three or more homers in a game this season.

Hammel pitched four total innings giving up nine hits, 10 runs, three strikeouts, and two walks on 85 total pitches. His ERA jumped from 2.58 to 3.45 on the season and he threw 18 pitches total before having to wait out a 68-minute rain delay that obviously did not help his performance.

The Mets showed off their offensive fireworks with homers by James Loney, Asdrubal Cabrera (2), Brandon Nimmo, and Yoenis Cespedes. It was Nimmo's first in his career after being called up on June 25.

Kris Bryant continued his power surge into the month of July with a solo homer in the fourth inning. The home run moved Bryant into a tie with Todd Frazier and Mark Trumbo for the major league lead in homers with 23. Bryant also leads the majors in road home runs with 14.

Rookie catcher Wilson Contreras had a double in the seventh inning to continue his 13-game on-base streak to begin his major league career.

At 51-28, the Cubs are still off to their best 78-game start to a season since 1918.

The Cubs will have reigning National League C.Y. Young winner Jake Arrieta (12-2, 2.10 ERA) on the mound against veteran righty Bartolo Colon (6-4, 2.86 ERA) on Saturday at 6:15 p.m. CT.
