The Chicago Cubs have their starting pitching rolling in 2020 despite having Jose Quintana sidelined with a thumb injury.

Cubs manager David Ross was asked if he could be ready for one of those doubleheader games next week against the St. Louis Cardinals.

"Yeah, I think he's still a little bit away," he said in a media session Friday. "He's going to throw Sunday, another sim game, four innings, and we'll get a better judge there talking to him.

Ross thinks he will know more about his status on Sunday.

"I didn't get the feel that he's quite ready yet. I think we'll get a lot of feedback from Sunday. But rushing a guy like that is so important just doesn't make a lot of sense in this scenario to me."

The lefty has yet to pitch in the majors this summer, but he tossed three innings in a simulated game in South Bend, Ind., on Wednesday.

For his career, Quintana has a 83-77 record with a 3.72 ERA, 1298 strikeouts, and 1.27 WHIP.
