Was the A's Opening Day starting pitcher but finished the season in the bullpen after spending four months on the disabled list with a stress fracture in his right foot. Made his first career Opening Day start April 1 against Seattle but was the losing pitcher in the A's 2-0 loss…became the A's eighth different Opening Day starting pitcher in the last eight years…allowed just two runs on four hits in 7.0 innings but issued a career-high tying six walks (sixth time, first since May 16, 2011 vs. Los Angeles-AL)…struck out the side in the first inning to become the first A's pitcher since at least 1947 to strike out the side in the first inning on Opening Day. Struck out a career-high tying 10 batters in 6.0 innings in his second start, a 9-3 win at Houston April 7 (also Sept. 18, 2009 vs. Cleveland)…it was his only win of the season…that gave him a 1.38 ERA and .191 opponents batting average over his first two starts. Went 0-3 with a 14.34 ERA and .400 opponents batting average over his final three starts. Surrendered a career-high tying three home runs in 5.2 innings in a 7-3 loss to Detroit April 13. Tossed 1.0 inning April 19 at Tampa Bay, allowing four runs on four hits and two walks…it was the shortest outing of his career as a starter…left the game early with a sprained right ankle. OAKLAND: Tossed his second career complete game in his second start of the season but took the loss in a 2-1 decision at Minnesota April 8...earned his first win April 19 against Boston when he combined with Breslow and Fuentes on a five-hit shutout in a 5-0 A's win...tossed 8.0 innings, allowed four of the hits and struck out a season-high eight...also won his next start April 24 at Seattle, allowing one earned run in 7.0 innings...is now 6-3 with a 1.90 ERA (16 er in 75.2 ip) in 12 career starts against the Mariners...was 2-1 with a 1.56 ERA following the start against Seattle, but then went 0-3 with a 5.04 ERA over his next five starts...began the losing streak by allowing seven runs on nine hits in 5.0 innings in an 11-2 loss to Texas April 30...matched his career highs by allowing three home runs and issuing four walks...it was his first of three four-walk games in 2011 (May 10 at Texas, May 16 vs. Los Angeles)...matched his career high by tossing 9.0 innings May 5 against Cleveland, but had a no decision in the A's 4-3, 12-inning loss...snapped his three-game losing streak by tossing 8.0 shutout innings in a 4-3 win at Los Angeles May 26...then allowed a career-high 10 runs on a career-high 11 hits in his next start, a 10-3 loss to New York May 31...allowed two home runs, both to left-handed hitters (Granderson and Cano)...those were his first home runs allowed to a lefty since Aug. 25, 2009 at Seattle (Branyan)...allowed five runs on nine hits in 5.0 innings in his final start, a 6-3 loss at Boston June 5...was placed on the disabled list June 7 with left elbow soreness...received a Platelet Rich Plasma injection after he was examined by Dr. James Andrews at the Andrews Institute in Pensacola, Fla. June 13...was examined again a month later and it was determined that his injury required surgery...Dr. Andrews performed successful reconstructive surgery to the ulnar collateral ligament in his left elbow, July 14...was transferred to the 60-day DL July 31.

OAKLAND: Did not allow a run in his first two starts of the season April 8 against Seattle and April 13 at Seattle to become the first starting pitcher in Oakland history (among pitchers who began the season with the A's) to start the season with two consecutive scoreless outings ... the last Athletics pitcher to do it was Alex Kellner of the 1953 Philadelphia A's, who started the season with back-to-back complete game shutouts ... was charged with the first wild pitch of his career in the game on the 13th, snapping a career-opening streak of 31 starts and 186.1 innings without a wild pitch ... the streak of 31 consecutive starts without a wild pitch tied for sixth longest by a starter in Oakland history ... agreed to terms April 16 on a four-year contract through the 2013 season with club options for 2014 and 2015 ... had his season-opening scoreless streak snapped at 14.0 innings in his third start, an 8-3 loss to Baltimore ... that was the third longest season-opening streak by a starter in Oakland history and the longest since Matt Keough set the record with a 16.0 inning streak in 1980 ... was 1-1 with a 2.35 ERA in four starts before going on the 15-day disabled list April 27 retroactive to April 25 with left elbow inflammation and a proximal medial forearm strain ... it was his first career stint on the DL ... made one rehab start with Triple-A Sacramento May 24 against Nashville and had a no decision in the River Cats' 8-3 win (3.0 ip, 6 h, 2 r, 2 er, 1 bb, 1 so, 1 hbp) ... was reinstated from the DL May 29 and had a win and a 2.35 ERA in two starts before returning to the DL with left elbow inflammation June 4 ... made four more rehab stats, going 0-0 with a 3.00 ERA in two starts with the A's affiliate in the Arizona Rookie League and 1-0 with a 3.48 ERA in two starts with Sacramento, before he was reinstated July 30 ... went 5-5 with a 2.98 ERA in 13 starts following his return ... yielded a career-high tying 10 hits in 5.1 innings in a 6-1 loss July 30 at Chicago but picked up the win in his next start Aug. 4 against Kansas City ... then had a career-high tying four-game losing streak from Aug. 10 to Sept. 1 ... went 0-4 despite a 3.21 ERA over that five-start span, receiving no run support three times, including Aug. 27 at Texas when he left after 2.0 innings with a mild hyper extension of his right knee ... the 2.0 innings pitched matched his career low (June 3, 2010 at Boston) ... then finished the season with a career-high tying four-game winning streak, posting a 2.18 ERA and holding the opposition to a .233 batting average over his final six starts ... walked a season-high three batters Sept. 11 against Boston, snapping a 22-start streak dating back to Aug. 19, 2009 where he walked two batters or fewer ... that was the second longest streak by a starting pitcher in Oakland history, falling four short of the record of 26 by Gil Heredia (April 10-Aug. 28, 1999) ... went 3-1 with a 2.23 ERA and .237 opponents batting average in six starts in September ... is now 7-1 with a 2.25 ERA (16 er in 64.0 ip) in 10 career starts in September and is 11-16 with a 3.94 ERA (98 er in 223.2 ip) in 39 starts the rest of the season.
