Compiled a 5.49 ERA (35 ER/57.1 IP) over 50 relief outings in his 2nd ML season…on the disabled list from 6/15-7/1 with a sprained right ring finger, the only days for which he has not been on the active roster in 2016-17…posted better SO/9 (8.9) than his rookie season (7.3), but saw drop off in SO/BB (2.59 in 2017 vs. 3.06 in 2016), WHIP (1.500 vs. 1.160), HR/9 (1.1 vs. 0.6) and BB/9 (3.5 vs. 2.4)…had the 2nd-most innings (57.1 IP) among Texas relievers to only Alex Claudio (78.2 IP)…earned 1st 2 ML saves in a 12-day span, 1st career ML save 8/23 at LAA and 2nd save 9/3 vs. LAA…his 2018 club option was formally declined on 11/6, making him a free agent…he re-signed to a one-year contract with Texas on 12/4.
His 2.09 relief ERA ranked 8th in the A.L. and was best among Rangers relievers, 2nd-best among league rookie relievers (HOU's Chris Devenski-1.61)…his 7 relief wins ranked T5th in the A.L…ranked among A.L. rookie relievers in wins (T3rd)…was also among team leaders in relief innings (3rd), appearances (4th), and relief K's (4th, 49)…allowed 10 of 37 inherited runners to score (27.0%), the 13th-lowest pct. among A.L. qualifiers…right-handed batters hit just .205 (25-122), and opposition had .149 (10-67) avg. with RISP… allowed runs in 2 of 1st 7 outings through 4/21 (4 ER/7.2 IP), then gave up just one run in 13.2 IP spanning 14 appearances from 4/23-5/29 to drop season figure from 4.70 to 2.11… recorded 1st ML win on 5/2 at TOR…allowed runs in 4 of 5 games from 5/31-6/12 (6 ER/4.2 IP) to rise to 3.81…in 18 outings from 6/19-8/10, allowed just one unearned run in 25.1 innings to drop ERA to season-low 1.93…included in that span was a 17.1-inning scoreless streak from 7/2-8/10, longest by a Ranger all season…opponents were just 3-for-41 (.073) in July…took blown save in only career chance on 7/18 at LAA… gave up runs in 4 of final 9 appearances beginning 8/12 (3 ER/9.0 IP) to finish at 2.09…missed nearly all of September with a tight left oblique, as he did not pitch from 9/5-26.
Appeared in all 3 games of the 2016 ALDS vs. TOR, tossing 4.0 scoreless innings…was tied for the 5th-most innings in an ALDS by a Texas reliever…made 9 appearances in NPB postseason in Japan, going 1-0 with a 2.31 ERA (3 ER/11.2 IP) and converting 3 of 4 save chances.
His 41 saves tied Hanshin's Seung-hawn Oh and Fukuoka's Sarfate for the most in Nippon Professional Baseball…had the second best save percentage in NPB at 97.6 (41 of 42) and tied for fifth in games finished (50)…set career best for appearances (59) and saves…compiled the 3rd lowest ERA (1.29) and 3rd lowest opponents batting average (.168) among all NPB pitchers with at least 60.0 innings…held right-handed batters to a .129 (13-101) batting average with LHB at .202 (24-119)…posted a 0.38 ERA (1 ER/23.2 IP) in 21 road games…converted his first 40 opportunities before lone blown save on Oct 2 vs. Hanshin…was a member of Central League team for NPB All-Star Series…allowed one run over 5 games and 5.0 innings in the postseason.
